Classes - Machine Quilting: Feathers and Stippling
Intermediate - 1 Day
In this workshop explore the beautiful feather design and how to enhance it with traditional stipple quilting. Sue has used the feather design successfully on many of her quilts and uses traditional stipple quilting to add dimension. The feather is the ideal design for free motion quilting and is easier than you might think. Students will work at the machine on a small feather project that Sue has created just for this workshop. To make the best use of class time, mark/trace on 12" muslin squares page 1 and page 2 of handout (the full handout will be given in class) the remaining squares will be marked in class. Handouts are provided with supply list link below.

Supply List
Sewing Machine (bring instruction manual, extension bar or table and all accessories) Don’t forget foot pedal and power cord!
Darning Foot- a must for free motion quilting
(Sue prefers an open toe darning foot)
Straight stitch throat plate (optional, bring if you have)
Six 12” squares muslin
Three 12” squares cotton or cotton blend batting
50 safety pins (I use size 1)
Sewing machine needles- 70/10 sharp (Schmetz brand called Microtex Sharp)
*Cotton thread- off white 50/2 ply (I use these brands: Aurifil and Superior Masterpiece)
*Marking pencil- I use Quilters Choice, silver and white
Pencil Sharpener
Rubber Gloves- kitchen dishwashing gloves, one size smaller than you wear for dishwashing (I use the fingertips for control in free motion quilting)
Basic sewing supplies- scissors or snips, extra bobbins, hand sewing needle, masking tape.
Extension cord/multi-plug strip
Optional, but good idea- extra light and cushion for height
Please Note- one or two irons and ironing boards will be needed for class to share.
SMALL QUILTING PROJECT
18” square light solid or tone on tone fabric
22” square backing fabric (print in matching color to top)
22” square batting (cotton, cotton blend or washable wool)
*Thread- 50/2ply thread (Aurifil or Masterpiece by Superior Thread)
Stencil fee of $6.00 for project.
*I will have Masterpiece threads for sale in a variety of colors.
*I will have silver Quilters Choice Marking pencils for sale.
